John Mayne built up a magnificent collection of early Togo material, which was auctioned by Corinphila in November 2023. The Corinphila auction catalogue contains detailed descriptions and many illustrations, supported by hundreds of scans. Corinphila have made available copies of all those scans, and given permission for us to reproduce them here. Rob May has, via Google, provided translations for each lot from the original German. These are occasionally idiosyncratic. The year column gives the date(s) of the material in each lot, and the grouping shows the period in Togo's complex philatelic history to which that lot belongs.
Each image scan number is a link, which when clicked on will open a new window with a full-sized image which may be copied and saved should you wish. The copyright of the images remains with Corinphila.

1887 |
1887 (July): KLEIN-POPO, letter from the time before the opening of German posts in Togo to Nantes, France, with the note: "Voie Anglaise, Stamps not obtainable". A letter that went via Hamburg and, despite the note, was transported by German steamer and received the framed stamp "FROM WEST AFRICA" on board. For delivery in France, postage stamps of 50 centimes were affixed. A small repair of an enthusiastic opening is of no importance. A rarity from the early days of the colony. |

1891 (Jan. 27): 1 1/2d. brown missionary postal stationery card from HO with corresponding handwritten sender's note. The card is cancelled with the B27 cancellation stamp of Quittah in blue, the day stamp distinguishing letter "A", dated 7 Feb. is also attached to the front. On the back, the formerly glued card is thin, but it represents very well. In addition, another card from LOME with British ship over Accra and a card from the Gold Coast all via Quittah. |

1892 (Jun. 13): 1 1/2d. brown missionary postal stationery card from HO with corresponding handwritten sender's note. The card is cancelled with the B27 cancellation stamp of Quittah, the day stamp distinguishing letter "A", from 21 Jun. is also attached to the front. The transport of mail from HO was easier and took less time over British territory, so this route was preferred to the way to Klein Popo at that time. According to the handwritten note "Woermann Line", the card was forwarded by German ship and received no further postmarks. A very rare early card, in excellent condition. |

1895 (Jun. 10): 1/2d. green as additional franking of the same value on missionary postal stationery card from HO with corresponding handwritten sender's note. The additional franking is slightly faulty, the card a bit wrinkled, cancelled with the B27 cancellation stamp from Quittah, day stamp distinguishing letter "c" next to it, and a LIVERPOOL BR. PACKET in red, as well as LUDWIGSBURG arrival stamp (25 Jul.). Transporting mail from HO was easier and less time-consuming, so this route was preferred to the way to Klein Popo at that time. A very rare card with an interesting historical background. |

It is an excellent opportunity to provide philatelic evidence for this affair. Some signs of ageing do not detract from the rarity. |

1895 (15 Oct.): 10 pfg purple red, two copies in a vertical pair as multiple franking on a cover with full contents from Klein Popo to Philippeville in Algeria. Six transit stamps and one arrival postmark, including French maritime mail, prove the postal transport to this unusual destination. In addition, another letter from the same correspondence, franked with four copies, 5 Pfg green, two months later with almost identical cancellation. Both envelopes have slight defects. Very attractive pair. |

1899 (13 Nov.): 10 Pf. purple red with TOGO imprint, on letter to Biberach an der Riss, where it arrived on 19 December of that year according to the arrival postmark. On the "return journey" the letter went via Liverpool (3 Jan.) and arrived at QUITTAH on 31 January. A great route to and from Africa is thus indicated: evidence of this kind is very scarce. |
