John Mayne built up a magnificent collection of early Togo material, which was auctioned by Corinphila in November 2023. The Corinphila auction catalogue contains detailed descriptions and many illustrations, supported by hundreds of scans. Corinphila have made available copies of all those scans, and given permission for us to reproduce them here. Rob May has, via Google, provided translations for each lot from the original German. These are occasionally idiosyncratic. The year column gives the date(s) of the material in each lot, and the grouping shows the period in Togo's complex philatelic history to which that lot belongs.

1887 (July): KLEIN-POPO, letter from the time before the opening of German posts in Togo to Nantes, France, with the note: "Voie Anglaise, Stamps not obtainable". A letter that went via Hamburg and, despite the note, was transported by German steamer and received the framed stamp "FROM WEST AFRICA" on board. For delivery in France, postage stamps of 50 centimes were affixed. A small repair of an enthusiastic opening is of no importance. A rarity from the early days of the colony. |

On the "return journey" the letter went via Liverpool (3 Jan.) and arrived at QUITTAH on 31 January. A great route to and from Africa is thus indicated: evidence of this kind is very scarce. |

The value of 1900 marks is in the 8th progression of 16 Pf. rounded up to 1M 30 Pf, together with the registration fee of 20 Pf, this letter is cleared with 1M 70 postage. An arrival stamp Saarbrücken 3 (2 Jul.) is attached to the back. The franking and the cover show a slight patina, which should not be significant in view of the immense rarity of the letter, there are now known five insured letters from Togo. A highlight of this beautiful collection. |

The stamps are cancelled ANECHO (14. Dec.) in blue. The letter is addressed to ANTHIEME with an arrival mark dated 20. December. The German type canceller appears to have been mis-set and no month slug has been inserted as is recorded on other items from this date. The 10c. stamp has been overprinted by two different types. This variety is unrecorded in Michel. The envelope has been folded and displays water-stains. Nonetheless a most rare and remarkable cover. Certificates Kilian BPP (1980) and Bothe BPP (1983). |

The sender is the commanding officer DAHOMEY and dependencies who has applied his seal to close the letter. The stamps are tied except for the 10 Pf carmine by three strikes of the blue ANECHO. Transit marks GRANND-POPO (8. Jan.) and COUTONOU (9. Jan.) are on the reverse. One of the earliest uses of the "Boxing Day find(?)" issue. A very rare letter. |
